Sue Johnson

Dr. Sue Johnson (1947-2024) was a distinguished clinical psychologist, author, and the primary developer of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a groundbreaking approach to couple therapy rooted in attachment theory. Born in Kent, England, Johnson experienced her parents’ divorce at a young age, which profoundly influenced her understanding of relationships. She emigrated to Canada at 22, where she completed her doctorate in counseling psychology at the University of British Columbia.

Johnson’s work revolutionized the field of couple therapy by emphasizing the emotional bonds that underpin romantic relationships. Her best-selling book, *Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love*, published in 2008, presents practical strategies for couples to enhance their emotional connection. Through EFT, she demonstrated that secure attachments are essential for relationship satisfaction and longevity.

As the founding director of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy and a professor at the University of Ottawa, Johnson trained countless therapists worldwide. Her contributions earned her numerous accolades, including the Order of Canada and the American Psychological Association’s Family Psychologist of the Year award. Johnson’s legacy endures through her influential research and writings, which continue to shape modern psychotherapy practices.
