Marshall Rosenberg

Marshall B. Rosenberg (1934-2015) was an American psychologist, mediator, and author, best known as the creator of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), also known as Compassionate Communication. He dedicated his life to promoting peace and understanding through communication practices that foster empathy and connection.

Rosenberg’s early experiences with violence and prejudice fueled his desire to understand the roots of human conflict and to find ways to resolve disagreements peacefully. He earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1961 and initially pursued a career in traditional psychotherapy. However, he grew dissatisfied with the limitations of conventional approaches and began to develop his own method, which eventually became NVC.

NVC provides a framework for communicating honestly and empathetically. It centers on four key components: observations, feelings, needs, and requests. By focusing on these elements, individuals can express themselves clearly without resorting to blame, criticism, or judgment. NVC also emphasizes active listening and seeking to understand the other person’s perspective, creating a foundation for compassion and collaboration.

Rosenberg founded the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) in 1984 to disseminate NVC principles and practices worldwide. He traveled extensively, conducting workshops and trainings in diverse settings, including schools, prisons, businesses, and conflict zones. His work has had a profound impact on individuals and communities seeking to improve their relationships, resolve conflicts, and create a more peaceful world. Rosenberg authored several books, including “Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life,” which has been translated into numerous languages and remains a seminal text in the field of communication and conflict resolution. His legacy continues through the work of CNVC and the many practitioners and trainers who are dedicated to sharing NVC with others.
