Laszlo Bock

Laszlo Bock is a Romanian-American businessman and author, best known for his tenure as Senior Vice President of People Operations at Google. Born in 1972 in Communist Romania, Bock’s early life instilled in him a deep appreciation for freedom of information, which later influenced his work at Google.

His career path was unconventional, spanning various industries from delis to consulting, before finding his passion in human resources. Dissatisfied with how companies treated employees, he sought to influence organizational behavior on a larger scale. This led him to General Electric, where he honed his HR skills before joining Google in 2006.

At Google, Bock spearheaded innovative people management strategies, transforming the company’s approach to hiring, talent development, and employee well-being. He championed data-driven decision-making in HR, pioneering practices like peer reviews, transparent compensation models, and a focus on employee empowerment. Under his leadership, Google was consistently recognized as one of the best places to work globally.

Bock is also the author of “Work Rules! Insights from Inside Google That Will Transform How You Live and Lead,” a book that shares Google’s people management philosophies and offers practical advice for creating a fulfilling and productive work environment. Since leaving Google, he has continued to advise companies on HR and organizational culture, advocating for a people-first approach to business.
